In the book The Method of Hope, there is a Japanese botanist who is famous among his colleagues for always finding the rarest medicinal plants deep in the rainforest. When they ask him his secret, he says something so profound.

He does not go into the rainforest looking for medicine. He goes in looking for something new. And in that openness, in that willingness to be surprised, the medicine always finds him.

Today’s guided future self meditation is inspired by that story. Most of us come to our practice the same way we come to everything else, looking for what we already know, hoping for the feeling we had last time, trying to recreate an experience rather than discover a new one. But what if we went in differently? What if we dropped the agenda and went looking for something we have never seen before?

In that wonderment, in that genuine openness, we stop performing our practice and we start actually living it. That is where we meet ourselves. Not the self we already know. The one that is waiting. The future self that has already figured it out.
